The ERA extension file is a data file that contains an Electronic Remittance Advice. An Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) is an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) version of a health insurance payment explanation.

This type of file provides details on the payment of claims from providers and, if the claims are not forthcoming, will contain the necessary explanations.

Explanations include inadmissibility codes and descriptions, found at the end of the ERA file.

Receiving an ERA file is a simple process and allows a shorter turnaround time on claims.

Through a clearinghouse, your payer will submit an ERA file whenever they receive and process an insurance claim.
