A TXT file is a plain text file.

The TXT file is a computer file that contains only text consisting only of characters that are human-readable, lacking any type of typographic format.

In fact, the TXT format rejects any typeface character, these files are composed of bytes that represent ordinary characters such as letters, numbers and punctuation marks, including white spaces, it also includes a few control characters such as tabs, line breaks and carriage returns.

If you want to create a document with more formatting capabilities, such as a report, newsletter, or resume, you should make use of a richer format, such as the DOCX file or the ODF format.

The TXT file is commonly used to record notes, instructions, and other similar documents that do not need to appear in a certain way.

TXT files contain minimal formatting, but comply with the format definitions accepted by the system terminal and plain text editors.

TXT files are universal because any word processor can read them.

Open a TXT file

To open a TXT file, you can use Notepad and Wordpad which are included in the Windows operating system and allow you to create and edit TXT files.

In the case of macOS, you can do it with TextEdit which is included in the operating system and is a good option for creating and editing TXT files.

It is important to mention that the ASCII coding system is the primary coding system used for TXT files. Multiple coding systems could be used for TXT files including: UTF-1, UTF-7, UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32, UTF-EBCDIC, SCSU, BOCU-1 and GB 18030.
