Open WEBM File

The WEBM file extension is directly related to HTML5 and represents royalty-free videos and importantly, they are based on the Matroska file container (MKV).

WEBM files were created with the purpose of guaranteeing compatibility with any web browser. Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome web browsers do support the playback of WEBM video files, but Internet Explorer 9 and Safari do require installation. plugins and external options for playing WEBM media.

YouTube pioneered the use of WEBM files in its HTML5 playback experiment. Both the web browser format and the YouTube application on mobile phones use this type of file to play video.

The WEBM file is a container, based on the Matroska standard, but this file container has been significantly modified by Google.

The encoding and decoding of WEBM files is possible using programs like FFVP8, or Google's LIBVPX decoder.

Matroska's MKVToolNix software supports WEBM multiplexing and demultiplexing.

Also from version 2.3 of Android (Gingerbread) and later, the playback of WEBM videos is allowed.

Here is a short list of programs and web browsers that allow the playback of WEBM files:
